What’s Next for Clottey, Pac-Man?

By David Berry: Isn’t this what we expected? Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO), as planned, blitzed through Joshua Clottey (35-4-20 KO) on Saturday night; another opponent left in the dust. Despite Bob Arum’s best efforts to sell this fight on its own merits, the end result was never in question. The only real question going into Saturday night, and the only one that remained afterward, was whether or not a mega fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO) could finally be inked when it was over, provided Mayweather can get through Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO) on May 1.

And while Pacquiao did his part on Saturday, Clottey did his as well. He stood up to his reputation as a skilled defensive fighter who’s incapable of pulling the trigger in his biggest fights, rendering himself a well guarded punching bag for each of the painstaking 12 rounds. Throwing just 399 punches to Pacquiao’s 1,231, it can be easily argued that Clottey did a better job of losing this fight than Pacquiao did of actually winning it. To be fair, Pacquiao looked brilliant in his offensive attack, varying and improving his tactics even as the fight moved in to the later rounds. But Clottey did a fine job of welcoming the fire by refusing to return it, absorbing a ratio of three punches for every one that he returned.

However, even with such a low punching output, Clottey exposed perhaps the one remaining flaw in Pacquiao’s game – defense, particularly against the jab and uppercut. When thrown, Clottey landed those two punches with alarming ease. And while Pacquiao’s chin has proven increasingly durable as he’s gone up in weight, his bruised cheekbones told the story of a fighter who still gets hit too often. To his credit, though, no fighter has been able to counter his offensive output enough for it to matter.

So while the world awaits the outcome of Mayweather vs. Mosley, we’re left with 6 weeks to do what fight fans and scribes always do – speculate about what’s next. Despite his reputation as an avoided fighter, Clottey has had his fair shake at each of the top welterweights in the division, and has fallen short against each of them. So what’s next for “The Grand Master”? Despite proving that he’s a step below the elite fighters in the division, Clottey remains a dangerous opponent for a vast majority of the fighters in his division. While a trip up to junior middleweight can’t be ruled out, Clottey still has plenty of options at welterweight. He represents a great measuring stick for fighters looking to improve their standing in the division. Names like Kermit Cintron and Luis Collazo come to mind. Andre Berto, the current WBC Welterweight Champion, represents a tough opponent, and could provide another shot at a title strap, as well. At the moment, though, Collazo may be his best option, with Cintron and Berto locked in for fights against Paul Williams and Carlos Quintana, respectively.

As for Pacquiao, It’s obvious that he has a wide variety of options, as he’s technically still a champion in two weight classes (junior welterweight and welterweight). The names Valero, Bradley and Marquez have been thrown around, but none will come close to satisfying the world’s appetite for a clash with Mayweather. Pacquiao has solidified his legacy to the point that only a Mayweather fight can enhance it. If a fight can’t be made with Mayweather, then there is no greater time than now for Pacquiao to ride off into the sunset, his mind and body intact.

Of course, reality is rarely shaped the way that we expect it to be. On May 1, though, the picture will begin to come into focus.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Manny Pacquiao was facing the largest man he had ever fought in Ghanian-born challenger Joshua Clottey.

In Clottey, the Filipino superstar and seven-division titlist was going against a man whose defense had been thought nearly impervious, and who never had been stopped.

Pacquiao didn't stop Clottey as much as overwhelm him, winning virtually every round on the way to a unanimous decision in defense of his WBO welterweight title before 50,944 at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday night.

"It was not an easy fight. It was hard. He's a great fighter. I threw lots of jabs in the beginning to counter his hook and uppercut," said Pacquiao, who threw a career-high 55 jabs in the first round. "I felt his power. He's strong. He was looking to land the big shot throughout the fight."

Judge Duane Ford had it 120-108, Levi Martinez had it 119-109, and Nelson Vazquez, 119-109, all for Pacquiao. FanHouse scored it 120-108 for Pacquiao.

Share "I felt that I was in control after the first round," said Pacquiao. "But I was cautious of his power throughout the entire fight. He took a lot of punishment. He's incredibly tough."

Pacquiao now awaits the winner between a May 1 clash between Floyd Mayweather and WBA welterweight king Shane Mosley.

"I want that fight. But it's up to him. I'm ready to fight any time. If Mosley wins, maybe I'll fight him. Floyd's style isn't difficult," said Pacquiao. "I want that fight, and right now, I know that I have the support of the fans, and I love them for it."

The 31-year-old Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) rose to 12-0 with eight stoppages since his last loss in March 2005 to Erik Morales, who he has since stopped in 10 and three rounds, respectively.

Pacquiao is 19-1-2 with 15 KOs under Freddie Roach, the four-time Trainer of the Year.

"I thought that we won every round. He's got good defense, but we pressured him, and good defense is not enough to win a fight," said Roach. "Manny was getting hit a little too much with the right, so we made an adjustment. Manny started throwing the right hook and got out afterwards."

Pacquiao was looking for his fifth straight knockout, having stopped David Diaz, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto in succession over his previous four bouts.

The 33-year-old Clottey (35-4, 20 KOs) had never been stopped, having lost to former world champs Carlos Baldomir, Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto, respectively.

"This is the first fight that I feel that I've lost," said Clottey. "He has great movement. He has great movement and speed. It was very difficult for me to handle that. I didn't feel much of his power, but I couldn't handle his speed."

He is in the car. I am in the car. Physically we are, both of us, in the car. Still, I wonder.

It's now January. In December, I spent a week traversing the Philippine archipelago in a vain attempt to speak with this man. Though it is difficult to arrive at an exact number, it is safe to say that during that week, slightly less than half the national population of 90 million people assured me with a wink that they would get me "in the car" with Manny Pacquiao. But there had been no car. No Manny Pacquiao. (Pronounced like a comic-book sound effect: pack-ee-ow!) I did spend the afternoon of the man's thirty-first birthday in his living room, playing a series of increasingly aggressive Christmas carols on his Yamaha grand piano in a last-ditch effort to flush him from his bedroom. (It was five in the afternoon. He had risen for the day an hour earlier.) But there was no Manny. At 6 p.m., in a single brisk movement, he descended from the balcony—eerily reminiscent of the one on which Al Pacino dies after screaming, "Say hello to my lee-tle frien'!" in Scarface—and out to a waiting caravan. He brushed my shoulder without looking at me as he passed. Or did he? Later, I could not shake my suspicion that the shoulder brush, the whole trip, was a dream. A vivid dream, of a place where every soul and every thing was lit from within by the still, small voice of Manny Pacquiao—Manny… Emmanuel…Hebrew for "God is with us"— but where Manny Pacquiao himself was nowhere to be seen.

But now, at a promotional event in Texas, the first boxer ever to win seven world titles in as many weight divisions, the first athlete ever to appear on a Philippine postage stamp, a man who in 2008 portrayed the Philippine warrior Lapu-Lapu, whose forces killed Magellan and repelled his conquistadores, in a reenactment of the 1521 Battle of Mactan, a man who often survives on three hours' sleep and is said to possess a photographic memory, is "in the car." As am I.

"Manny," I begin, "one of the many reasons GQ wants to feature you is that we want to explain why your appeal in the United States extends far beyond the sport of boxing. Do you have a theory about this?"

The members of his posse, encircling him at ten, two, three, four, six, eight, and nine o'clock, lean in and look. Nothing about the man moves. He remains perfectly postured, eyes forward, arms crossed, the vertical of his chassis aligned with, determining, the center of the SUV's bench seat and of the vehicle itself. Time passes.

"Manny," I begin again, "are you aware that millions of people in this country who don't follow boxing follow you?" I can see myself reflected in his oversize mirrored Oakleys. I look ridiculous.

After a time, the tiniest parting of the lips, just a sliver of a shadow between them, and a low exhalation:

"Yaaah."

Then Manny Pacquiao tilts his head back several degrees to indicate the departure of his presence.

It is then, at long last, that a phrase Pacquiao's people use to explain his mysterious ways—which isn't an explanation at all but a surrender—begins to seem adequate.

Because he is Pacquiao.

After the car ride, we all fly to New York on his promoter's plane. There is great consternation in the hangar prior to departure. Five men huddle over a small package. They look ashen, cancer-stricken. A decision is reached. The tallest of them, a Canadian named Michael Koncz, takes the package and marches, as if toward his own death, onto the airplane.

After takeoff, Koncz opens the package. It's Manny's dinner. Koncz presents the dish to Pacquiao and, in a tone born more in sorrow than in anger, announces that something has gone terribly wrong; instead of rice, the chef has accompanied Manny's meat with mashed potatoes. Manny nods. "I'm so sorry, Manny," Koncz says as he begins to cut Pacquiao's steak and season his cooked vegetables for him. "The bread is very soft, though." Manny prays, eats. After, he reposes on a couch. As one member of Team Pacquiao begins to massage his feet, calves, and thighs, Koncz drapes him in a blanket, methodically but gently tucking its edges in.

"And now," Manny Pacquiao says to me with a lovely smile, "you talk."

You're not a boxing fan? Doesn't matter. We're all fans of the strange, hardwired to seek and behold it—and Manny Pacquiao is the most beautifully strange human being to befall boxing, and perhaps even all of sport, in a generation.

Beautiful and strange to the eye, of course. That speed! The coil and float. The spooky slowing of time. The suspicion he creates in you that your naked eye only partially apprehends him—that what he does in the ring exceeds your spectrum.

And beautifully strange on paper. At the elite level, a boxer's optimal fighting weight involves a trade-off of speed and power. Particularly in the lighter weight classes, a boxer who enters the ring thirty-two ounces over or under his natural fighting weight is often too slowed or weakened to win. Despite such parameters, Pacquiao has won divisions ranging from flyweight, a belt he won in 1998 as a 112-pound 19-year-old, to welterweight, a division that tops out at 147 pounds, in November 2009. (He began his career in 1995, as a 16-year-old, 106-pound light flyweight.) On March 13, he'll defend his welterweight belt against the Ghanaian fighter Joshua Clottey. According to every metric, Pacquiao…can't be. Which is why, over the past fifteen years, the expert nay-saying has come even from his own corner. "I would think that Manny can fight at 140. But I think going past 140 would be a mistake," Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, told ESPN in December 2008. "Every time I think of Manny in a ring with [Puerto Rican welterweight] Miguel Cotto… it begins to look a little ludicrous." In other words, even Pacquiao's supernatural speed wouldn't matter. A natural welterweight like Cotto would register the punches as love taps; Pacquiao, in turn, would be crushed.

The people of the Phiilippine are busy getting ready for the fight dubbed "The Event" on Sunday between the People's Champ Manny Pacquiao and Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey in Dallas, Texas.

Big Private individuals and businesses have set up their generator sets to make sure that the rotating blackouts will not interrupt their viewing.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has also assured the local government the supply of electricity in every city of the , will not be cut.

Hundreds of Pacquiao vs Clottey fans are expected to troop to every municipality gym. Free tickets have already been distributed by local officals later this day.

Meanwhile, Manny Pacquiao's parents are also busy preparing for the fight.

After visiting her dermatologist on Friday, Pacquiao's mother, popularly known as Mommy Dionisia, went to the salon Saturday afternoon to relax while everyone is busy preparing for the fight.

The Pac-Mom says she chose not to go to the US to watch her son because of her belief that she must stay in her newly built mansion for a month before traveling elsewhere.

"Sa akin lang yun na paniniwala, mag one month pa ako, pagkatapos niyan, pwede na ako magbyahe," she says.

And as always, Mommy Dionisia says she would again kneel before the statue of the virgin Mary and pray the rosary during the fight.

"Hindi naman talaga ako nanonood, pagkatapos ng laban na lang. Sa mansion ako, sa bahay ni Manny. Pagkatapos ng Simba, diretso ako sa bahay niya, dun ako mag-pray," she says.

("I don't really watch the fight. I'll watch it after. I'll be in Manny's mansion, and then I'll go to church to pray, then I'll go back to his house.")

The Pacman's father, Mang Rosalio, will also stay in the country for health reasons

"Wala ko niuban kay naa koy pamati sa akong lawas ("Di ako sumama sa Texas kasi may nararamdaman akong iba sa katawan ko. Masama ang pakiramdam ko.)," he says.

("I did not go to Texas because some parts of my body are aching. I don't feel well.")

Pacquiao Vs Clottey Aims for a KO

DALLAS, Texas – Manny Pacquiao, acknowledged as the greatest fighter today, puts his reputation on the line Saturday evening here (Sunday noon in Manila) when he takes on Joshua Clottey of Ghana at the Cowboys Stadium, before what should be the biggest boxing crowd in recent years.

Promoters have considered all 45,000 tickets sold, and by the time Pacquiao, the WBO welterweight champion, climbs into the ring at the center of the $1.2-billion stadium, millions more will be watching in Canada, Puerto Rico, Russia, Europe, Mexico, all of Asia and the rest of the United States.

For Pacquiao, so much is at stake in this fight. As the current pound-for-pound champion, there is tremendous pressure for him to deliver, even if the fight odds – which make him an 8-1 favorite – say it should be a walk in the park. Many are looking for a knockout, whether it comes early or late.

But as usual, the Pacman is not promising anything.

“I’m not going to promise a knockout. But I will do my best to make the people happy. I don’t want to disappoint the fans,” said the 31-year-old who has baffled some ring experts and most of his opponents with his meteoric rise from a champion in the 112-lb division more than 10 years ago to the king of the 147-lb class.

During Friday’s official weigh-in just outside the main entrance of the Cowboys Stadium, Pacquiao said he worked hard over the last seven weeks, even if the normal distractions around him came up. One of these distractions is his bid to win a seat in Congress in the May 10 elections.

“Of course, I’m focused. I always concentrate on the fight and I’m not thinking of anything else. We have a strategy that we prepared in our training,” said the champion, who carries a ring record of 50 wins, including 38 knockouts, with only three defeats and two draws. He has won his last 11 fights since 2005.

It will be the first defense of the title which Pacquiao won over Miguel Cotto last November in Las Vegas, the one that made him the first boxer in history to keep seven world titles in seven different weight classes in his bedroom closet. If he wins, he cements his status as probably the greatest fighter in boxing history.

Looking for an upset

Clottey, a former IBF welterweight champion but still hungry for recognition, said he’s going for an upset. If he succeeds, he will bring back memories of a great one when James “Buster” Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson, then an incredible 42-1 favorite, with a vicious combination in the 10th round.

Stranger things have happened in boxing, and Clottey said the possibility is always there.

“I will shock the world. I feel so good. Like I said, we have a game plan, and I’m ready to show the world who I am. This one will be different because I will be stronger than in all my fights. I trained hard for this fight. I’m ready to fight,” said Clottey who, like Pacquiao, carries the hope of his poor nation.

“This is a very big opportunity for me, and if I win, the lives of many will change. Then it’s going to be all joy. It’s going to be fantastic. We’re like the Philippines, third world. It’s very hard to make money,” said Clottey, who will earn $1.2 million for facing Pacquiao. It’s a paycheck he’s never gotten close to all his life.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, is guaranteed $12 million, and should get a few millions more once everything comes in, from the pay-per-view sales, ticket sales, merchandise sales and television rights back home. It’s nothing new for Pacquiao to get as much. In fact, he took home more than that when he faced Oscar dela Hoya in 2008.

While Pacquiao has always kept his cards close to his chest, his trainer, Freddie Roach, is more vocal in calling for a knockout.

“I think we will stop him. Yes. I don’t think we will knock him out with one punch. I think we will overwhelm him,” said Roach after the weigh-in.

He said a week ago that a knockout may come in the sixth, seventh, ninth or even the first round, but this time he played it safe by saying, “Before the twelfth.”

Pacquiao had no problem making the weight, tipping the scales at 145 3/4 lbs. He’s never had problems since he moved up to the welterweight class, and never had to starve himself in training camp. Dr. Allam Rector, who carries an all-access pass within the Pacquiao camp, said the boxer woke up Friday at 144 lb.

And after a brisk walk, Pacquiao was down to 142, and he enjoyed the luxury of eating hard-boiled eggs for breakfast and fish for lunch.

Clottey must have drooled over that luxury because word had it that the challenger from Ghana had trouble making the weight. When he tipped the scales at 5 p.m. he was at exactly 147 lb.

Pacquiao and Clottey (35-3 with 21 knockouts) will climb the ring at 10 p.m. Dallas time, 12 noon in Manila.

Clottey’s trainer, Lenny de Jesus, who used to work as cutman for Pacquiao, said they’re also going for a knockout.

“We will hit him right, knock him out and win the fight,” he said. “We don’t sell tickets that’s why we’re the underdogs. But we are tough underdogs.”

Pacquiao said De Jesus, who worked his corner when the Pinoy icon fought Emmanuel Lucero in 2003, and up to Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales in 2005, has all the right to say that Clottey’s going to win by knockout because he’s the bigger and supposedly stronger boxer.

“That’s interesting. They are free to say whatever they want to say,” said Pacquiao, who’s giving up almost two inches in height and in reach, and a few lines when it comes to muscles. But that doesn’t mean he’s giving away something when it comes to speed and power.

“Let’s just see what happens in the ring. That’s what they said when I fought Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto - that they are bigger. On my part, I just train hard and fight hard,” said Pacquiao.

“May the best man win,” added Pacquiao, out to remove any doubt that he is indeed the best fighter out there.

In an earlier interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Pineda said he will make sure that his rendition of "Lupang Hinirang (Chosen Land)" will be appreciated by old and young Filipinos.

"Ang sa akin ay kakantahin ko ito sa paraan na alam kong magugustuhan ng mga Filipino, bata man o matanda," said Pineda who was personally invited by Pacquiao to sing for his upcoming fight.

"Ito ang pambansang awit natin I have to make sure na maganda ang pagkaka-awit natin," he added.

He also said that he will definitely do his best to stay true to the correct rendition of the Philippine anthem to avoid receiving a reprimand letter from the National Historical Institute (NHI). He said he is confident that he will sing the anthem flawlessly.

"Kakantahin ko lang siya sa puso ko. Ang mga Pilipino na ang magsasabi kung tanggap ba nila ang pagkakanta ko," said Pineda.

The proper way of singing “Lupang Hinirang” became a big issue following the "incorrect" rendition of the national anthem by Concert King Martin Nievera during the May 2, 2009 fight of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas.

NHI had also called the attention of Charice, Christian Bautista, and Jennifer Bautista, who also sang "Lupang Hinirang" in other bouts of Pacquiao, about their incorrect renditions of the national anthem.

According to Section 37 of Republic Act (RA) 8491, the rendition of the national anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.

Section 20 of the law also states: "The rendition of the flag ceremony in official or civic gatherings shall be simple and dignified and shall include the playing or singing of the anthem in its original Filipino lyrics and march tempo."

RA 8491 prescribes that any person who will violate its provisions may be punished by a fine of at least P20,000 or imprisonment of not more than one year.

Aside from singing in the Pacquiao-Clottey bout, Pineda is also set to go to US this coming April to record the latest album of Journey.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A weigh-in at the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium isn't just a normal one.

With screaming fans and the plaza doors open to show the massive video board as a backdrop, Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey weighed in Friday for their Saturday night WBO welterweight title fight.

Pacquiao, the champion, came in at 145¾. Clottey was at 147.

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said he wasn't concerned about his fighter's weight. Pacquiao averaged about 152 pounds per day during training.

"After he stopped drinking protein shakes, the weight drops," said Roach, who added his fighter weighed 144 on Friday morning.

The fighters tried to stare each other down after the weigh-in but broke out in laughter.

The weigh-in was attended by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who said this inaugural fight at the stadium is "hopefully one of many."

Promoter Bob Arum said he expects the fight to have at least 1 million pay-per-view buys with the fight shown in more than 80 million homes worldwide.

The event brought out a star-studded crowd which included actor Robert Duvall and former Dallas Cowboys safety Darren Woodson.

Cowboys officials expect 42 former and current members of the team to attend the fight, including former coach Jimmy Johnson and ex-quarterback Troy Aikman.

The fight is nearing a sellout of 45,000, and stadium officials said they will sell standing-room only tickets for $35 each.

You can count out some of today’s panelists on ESPN’s Around the Horn for being excited about the upcoming Pacquiao fight. 3 of the 4 panelists on today’s episode think that this fight is no big deal at all. Some panelists even said don’t bother them until Pacquiao and Mayweather fight. Let’s examine further.

During the show’s “Buy or Sell” segment, the host Tony Reali asked the question “is the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight a deal or no deal”? All 4 panelists J.A. Adande, Woody Paige, Gene Wojciechowski, and Kevin Blackistone had an opportunity to share their opinions about the fight.

“This is no deal. PPV? You gotta pay me to watch this fight.”

“It aint Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, that’s why I’m not interested”.

Only Kevin Blackistone thought this fight was a big deal and he was correct in the reasons that he gave. But let me add a few more obvious reasons. The stars that are showing up this fight will give it the “important” feel. The venue is a first of it’s kind. And Pacquiao is the best fighter in the sport.

Pacquiao vs Clottey: addressing the weight difference on fight night

Earlier on today, Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey both made weight for their showdown tomorrow night in Dallas. Pacquiao, who reportedly struggles to keep weight on to make welterweight, came in at 145 ¾ to Clottey's solid 147. On the night of the fight, Pacquiao isn't expected to come in a lot heavier than 150lbs, while Clottey's camp estimates 160lbs will be his actual fighting weight. While on paper this might look to be in Clottey's advantage, there are some drawbacks of being that much bigger than his already faster opponent. Pacquiao, coming from the lower weights is already much faster than Clottey. In fact the only welterweight who could probably match him today is Floyd Mayweather, a defensive fighter himself but a far cry from the Accra standout. Clottey will try to use his size and weight to wrestle Pacquiao, rough him up in the clinches, lean on him and let's face it, its pretty likely he might cut him with his head. Pacquiao for his part will need to keep his distance and vary his usual pattern of straight forward attacking.

Pacquiao doesn't do well with dirty opponents or being cut, but similarly Clottey and his extra bulk is only going to slow him down even further. One of the biggest intangibles is that Clottey's stand in trainer used to work with Pacquiao as a cut man, and was present the last time Manny lost. DeJesus knows Manny isn't keen on being cut, and he also no doubt knows Clottey has a head like a block of concrete and his skin is like shoe leather. Other fighters can clash heads with Clottey all they want, but they are the only ones getting cut open. If Clottey does cut Pacquiao, unintentionally or otherwise, then the fight will probably be a lot closer. Pacquiao's whirlwind attack will have to be more measured and Clottey might find picking him off as he comes in a lot easier.

Pacquiao will probably still take it, but Clottey might not go down without a fight as some are expecting. Shaun Smith, Pittsburgh PA: "Lots of people thought Clottey's trainer being away would hold him back, but in the end it worked out a lot better for him. Lenny DeJesus is a better trainer than his original one, and he's worked with Pacquiao before as well" Frank Hague, Pittsburgh PA: "My big worry about Clottey was that he might have struggled to make the 147lb limit. Cotto looked like a skeleton against Pacquiao and the fight reflected that. Clottey looked in great shape though, should be a good one"

Dean Martel, Pittsburgh PA: "Clottey looks a lot bigger than Pacquiao, but he'll need a lot more than size alone to make much of an impact. Cotto couldn't make a dent and he was nearly as big as Clottey by fight time"

Joshua Clottey is as tough and dangerous a welterweight as there is in boxing.

He has cut his teeth against the world's best 147-pounders; he has an aggressive, straight-forward style that makes him fun to watch and easy to root for. He is gutsy, determined and skillful, and two of his three losses have come via decision to a pair of boxing's elite fighters.

Those who think the native of Ghana is a mere replacement for Floyd Mayweather Jr. don't know boxing.

Unfortunately for "Grandmaster," he is fighting the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world -- a superstar who is in his prime and considered not only the best fighter of the last decade, but one of the greatest warriors to ever lace up the gloves.

Yes, even for highly-qualified, deserving, former world champions like Clottey, facing Manny Pacquiao is a daunting task. And the challenger will need a superhuman effort to come out victorious when the duo meets for "Pac-Man's" WBO welterweight title at Cowboys Stadium (7 p.m. today, HBO pay-per-view).

Matchup problems

Clottey, 35-3 (20 knockouts), nearly hit the jackpot in his last fight, a razor-close 12-round decision loss to Miguel Cotto last June. He rebounded from a flash knockdown in the first round to punish Cotto down the stretch, turning the Puerto Rican's face into a bloody mess.

Cotto got the disputed decision, with that knockdown playing a vital role in the outcome. Afterward, Clottey -- painfully close to a career-defining victory -- pleaded for a rematch.

It is ironic then that, nine months later, Clottey is getting an opportunity against the guy who beat Cotto. It goes without saying that he matched up better with Cotto. Because nobody matches up well with Pacquiao, 50-3-2 (38 KOs).

The Filipino mega-star not only fires lightning-quick punches out of a southpaw stance -- making him one of the most technically-difficult fighters in the world -- he also is among the hardest punchers in boxing.

He caught Oscar De La Hoya with a stiff, jarring left hand in the first round of their December 2008 fight, and the bigger, taller De La Hoya never fully recovered.

From there, it was a massacre, with the 5-foot-6 Pacquaio registering a ninth-round TKO over the 5-10 De La Hoya. That was the start of an all-time great stretch for Pacquiao, who since then has knocked out Ricky Hatton (KO 2) and Cotto (TKO 12) in spectacular fashion.

Pacquiao is at the top of his game. But, at age 31, you have to wonder how much longer the joy ride will last.

A tough one

The first six rounds will be key for Clottey.

If the Ghanian can survive Pacquiao's speed, accuracy and crunching power for 18 minutes, his physical strength and bigger frame could have an effect on the Filipino. And, since Pac-Man hasn't been shy lately about engaging in toe-to-toe slugfests -- especially against fighters to which he feels superior -- a bonafide war could ensue.

That would be Clottey's best chance at victory.

But, even then, the challenger would be outgunned -- and getting beat three punches to one. At least. Every round will be exciting, and the Texas crowd will be treated to an action-packed, historic fight.

But, at the end of the day, the champ is just too good.

Pac-Man will use his amazing speed and power to wear Clottey down, who will be badly beaten and swollen at the end -- but gallant and still standing.

ARLINGTON, Texas - With announcer Michael Buffer repeatedly describing the venue as “the Eighth Wonder of the World,” Cowboys Stadium hosted a dry run last night, as the world’s top boxer, World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines and his Ghanaian challenger, Joshua Clottey, weighed in atop a stage erected on the concourse fronting the venue. Just before Pacquiao and Clottey emerged from their dressing rooms, the massive floor-to-ceiling glass doors were winched open, leaving the end of the stadium fully exposed. With a beaming host and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and promoter Bob Arum looking on, first Clottey (147 pounds) and then Pacquiao (145) mounted the scale under the supervision of Texas boxing official Dickie Cole. Pacquiao’s appearance was greeted by a thunderous ovation from what seemed to be thousands of Filipino supporters (as well as by one man carrying a sign whose allegiance proclaimed “Irish for Pacquiao”).

Clottey was met with polite applause.

According to Arum, one man is more responsible than any other for the fact that Pacquiao and Clottey will mix it up before a sold-out crowd of 45,000-plus, not to mention a pay-per-view audience that could top 750,000 buys and a worldwide television audience that will number in the millions. And no, Arum wasn’t talking about himself, his partner Jones or even Floyd Mayweather Jr., although all of the above certainly bear some responsibility. Rather, the guy Arum had in mind was David Diaz, who in June 2008 put his World Boxing Council lightweight title on the line in agreeing to face Pacquiao.

“He didn’t have to do it,” noted Arum.

At the time Pacquiao had 50 professional bouts, but since he had never weighed more than 130 pounds, his credentials as a lightweight were nonexistent. There were those who felt Diaz might be too big for him and that the talented Filipino southpaw might be overreaching with the step up in weight. But Pacquiao stopped Diaz in nine rounds that night to set in motion a remarkable journey that has taken him from a widely admired boxer to a veritable superstar legitimately compared to the very best who have ever worn gloves.

A guy who had never fought as a lightweight until he met Diaz will be fighting for the third time as a welterweight. In the interim he has fought and disposed of some of the sport’s biggest names: Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto, none of whom survived to hear the final bell. Win, lose or draw tonight against Clottey, Pacquiao will be in New York come June to pick up his third consecutive Fighter of the Year award from the Boxing Writers Association of America.

“But if the Diaz fight doesn’t happen, neither does the De La Hoya fight,” said Arum. “He might not have fought Hatton or Cotto, and he might not be fighting Clottey (tonight).”

Diaz’ reward is a berth against Humberto Soto in the televised portion of the 10-bout card, a fight in which he will attempt to regain the same championship he lost to Pacquiao 21 months earlier. Boxing writers named him as having re-invented the sport of sweet science, inspired millions, perhaps billions of people around the world. It would not be an overstatement that Manny Pacquiao is being hailed these days as the savior of a sport and a nation. The Filipino boxer, who barely stands at 5ft 6½ inches , is universally regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, a point he emphatically demonstrated the past decade by crowning himself world champion in seven weight classes, the last the welteweight belt at the expense of Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto only November of last year, in the process enriching himself by US$13 million. No less that Bob Arum, his promoter who head Top Rank, believes Pacquiao, otherwise – known as “ Pacman”, is the one boxer responsible for a resurrection of the long-dormant sport.

As for his countrymen, he approximates the status of deity.

Every time he fights, crime in the country drops to virtually zero. Whenever Pacquiao’s fights are on television. Shooting between army troops and the rebels in the south or elsewhere actually stopped. All this simply adds to his status in as a humble superstar who gives away thousands of dollars each year to help his fellow countrymen cope with grinding poverty. Born 31 years ago in the little-known town of Kibawe, Bukidnon in far south Mindanao, Pacquiao grew up selling breads and flowers to help keep his family in food. Like many of his countrymen, he had no shoes, little formal education and no future until he fled home at 14 to try his luck in prizefighting. From the time he won his first professional fight, a four-rounder by decision, on January 22, 1995, rose from a 106-pound fighter to someone who has won world titles at flyweight (112), super-bantamweight (122), featherweight (126), super-featherweight (130), lightweight (135), light-welterweight (140) and welterweight (147).
His victims include Ricky Hatton, Oscar DeLa Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Erik Morales, future Hall of Famers all and, in baseball, members of the murderers’ row in the batting order. Those victories catapulted the Filipino icon to the world pound-for-pound throne, a mythical title he has worn the past three years.

Pacquiao has fought 55 times, six fewer than the great Muhammad Ali and had boxed the same number of rounds (305) that Sugar Ray Leonard had when he retired. Reason why even on the very eve of his fight with Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey for his welterweight plum on Sunday, debate on whether he should retire continues.

And chief trainer Freddie Roach, who has been handling him since 2001 as a flyweight champ,, has been pursuing the issue as a reminds of the perils of an overextended boxing career, as he battles the effects of pugilistic Parkinson's syndrome.

Pacquiao was already a pretty good fighter when he walked into Roach's Los Angeles gym in 2001 and asked Roach to be his new trainer. Pacquiao had won 31 of 35 bouts outside the United States and already owned the first of his major titles, the WBC flyweight (112-pound) championship. But the fighter, who relied almost exclusively on his dominant left hand, sensed he needed more if he wanted to conquer the sport in the United States. Roach agreed.

Roach, whom Pacquiao referred to as his “master”, tutored technique and preached the importance of ring strategy. He taught the importance of angles as well as the art of hitting and running. In the end, it has been a match made in boxing heaven. In their first fight together, Pacquiao won the IBF super bantamweight (122-pound) championship in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao has won his last 11 bouts by KO, including a career-ending against DeLa Hoya. He’s been voted Fighter of the Year in 2006, 2008 and 2009 by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Has a 90-1-2 record in world championship fights.

On Tuesday, the mild-mannered Clottey accidentally met Pacquiao’s coach Freddie Roach. Despite belonging to opposing camps, the 2 men warmly greeted each other and even posed for pictures.

In an interview with ABS-CBN, Clottey said he is grateful to be given the chance to fight the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion.

“I'm a nice person, so you know good things happen to good people so if you're nice to people, God is always watching you. So I thank God that I will fight Manny Pacquiao,” he said.

However, he said no matter how he admires the Filipino boxer, it will be all business when they climb the ring.

“No matter how much I like him... this is a business, so whoever you meet in this business, you must crush him. I will meet Manny on the line and I'm going to fight him,” he said.

In his open workout in Texas, fewer fans came to see him box compared to Pacquiao.

He is considered an underdog compared to his more popular opponent but it didn’t bother him at all.

Clottey said he has what it takes to upset Pacquiao.

“I have everything to stop his speed. I will fight him because I'm very, very ready. I have myself, Joshua,” said the Ghanaian.

The challenger said Pacquiao would have to work very hard to beat him.

GRAPEVINE, Texas – Manny Pacquiao arrived in Dallas on a charter plane on Monday with an entourage of about 130 people in tow.

A crowd of about half that many on Tuesday encircled Joshua Clottey – his opponent on Saturday in their HBO Pay-Per-View bout for the World Boxing Organization welterweight championship at Cowboys Stadium – in the lobby of the hotel where Clottey is staying.

Clottey looked more like a candidate for political office than a boxer as he moved comfortably among the people, many of whom were asking someone else in the crowd who it was they were waiting to see.

A young man wearing a T-shirt with Pacquiao’s image asked to have his photo taken with Clottey, who beamed and quickly slapped his right arm around the man’s shoulders. Just as the man’s friend was taking the picture, though, Clottey made a fist and pretended to punch the photo of Pacquiao in the nose as the crowd chortled. A few minutes later, an elderly woman posed for a picture with Clottey and then walked away grinning, saying to no one in particular: “Isn’t he darling?”

Clottey easily could have retreated to the sanctuary of his massive suite to avoid the fans. He was having too much fun, however, to leave.

A guy from Ghana who was once betrayed in his own country – and who spent most of his career playing second fiddle to higher-profile boxers – was intent on soaking it all in.

He remembered a time when his countrymen didn’t hide their disdain for him, when it seemed unlikely that he’d follow in the footsteps of such boxing greats as Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey and become an international star.

He was challenged by men who were once his friends, who told him to his face that he was never going to amount to anything and that they wanted a chance to beat him up.

“People wrote me off, and the papers, the people, nobody [in Ghana] was talking about Joshua Clottey,” he said later, gulping down a plate of fruit while relaxing in his suite. “They would come up to me and said, ‘You’re nothing, man. I want a chance to fight you in the ring.’ A close friend of mine who had been everywhere with us when I was fighting in England came up to me. He said, ‘You’re too old, man. It’s over.’ ”

Clottey was 25 years old and had a 26-1 record – his only loss a hotly contested decision to Carlos Baldomir, a one-time feather-duster salesman who would later go on to become the undisputed welterweight champion.

Clottey knew the only way to salvage his career was to base himself in the United States. So, with little more than his courage and his boxing gear, he set out to make a new life for himself. He desperately wanted to succeed in his career because he knew in his heart he was good enough to be the next in the string of great Ghanaian fighters. He just needed a chance, and to that point in his career he wasn’t getting it.

“The only choice I had at that point was to go to America,” Clottey said. “I talked to God. I said, ‘Hey God, America is the last place for Joshua Clottey. It’s the mecca of boxing. If you want to be a champion, if you want to become a big star, you have to go to America – nowhere else. I am begging you: Please God, let me become someone. Let them talk about me like the way they talk in America about Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah. I need this God. Please.’

“I came to America and I prayed that God would do it for me. And to my surprise, it really happened.”

The road to a bout against the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world was neither fast nor easy – and it wasn’t like Clottey was greeted as a conquering hero when he touched down in the States.

When he arrived in Las Vegas, an acquaintance from Ghana dropped him at a small motel. A day later, he received a disconcerting telephone call from someone on the motel staff.

“They said, ‘You’re going to have to leave,’ ” Clottey recalled. “I said, ‘What do you mean? Somebody put me here.’ ”

But that someone didn’t pay for more than one night and the motel wasn’t about to treat him as a charity case. He had little money and wasn’t sure what to do. He knew of another Ghanaian living in Las Vegas. He made another call and soon found himself a guest in the man’s two-bedroom home.

It would have been perfect, except for one small thing.

“He was smoking weed all the time – chain-smoking it,” Clottey said. “He would have cocaine, there was drinking. It was a terrible atmosphere. I would rather go home and quit than be in the middle of that. It was a place to become an addict.”

So he called his older brother, Emmanuel, and asked what he should do. Emmanuel Clottey recommended a move to New York City’s Bronx borough. Desperate to salvage his career and find a place where he could fulfill his destiny, Joshua agreed.

The decision to move to New York was a watershed moment in his life. It was like the scene in “The Wizard of Oz,” when it shifted from black-and-white to color. Clottey arrived in the Bronx and discovered native food, an African market and boxing gyms aplenty.

“It was like I was home in Ghana, but I was living in America in New York,” he said. “I said, ‘Wow, I’m never going to leave this place. I have found it. I love the Bronx.’ ”

He went to the gym and quickly built a reputation as one of the toughest men in the place. Vinny Scolpino, a New York businessman and boxing manager, brought one of his fighters to the gym to spar with Clottey.

They began to talk. Clottey expressed dissatisfaction with the way his career had progressed. He needed competent representation; Scolpino needed some quality fighters.

“I just saw him as a tough, dedicated kid, and I really didn’t think about anything else,” Scolpinio said. “I didn’t think of all the problems and the baggage. I’ve told him this many times, but I could smell something different about him. He had that something about him, a drive, that made him different. You could see it when he was in the ring. A lot of people had the opportunity to help him but they didn’t. I knew he was a hard-nosed guy and I knew he was a guy who could use some help.”

Clottey’s career took off not long after. He got a bout against Antonio Margarito in Atlantic City, N.J., on Dec. 12, 2006. During his training camp, he’d had pain in his knuckles on his left hand, pain that only went away when he’d rest the hand completely for several days.

In the fifth round, he hit Margarito with a jab and a hook and instantly winced. Pain shot up his arm. In the next round, the same thing happened to his right hand. He walked back to his corner, planning to quit.

Scolpino and his girlfriend urged him to keep fighting.

“My girl,” Clottey said, chuckling. “My girl says I can’t quit, so I say, ‘OK. I won’t quit.’ ”

He fought defensively the rest of the fight, spending most of his time blocking Margarito’s punches. He went to a hospital after the fight to have his hands checked, where he learned he had stress fractures in both. While he was there, he saw Margarito, who was in obvious pain. Margarito’s face was badly swollen and he would wince in pain when he was touched.

“I felt bad for him, to be honest,” Clottey said. “But I thought to myself, ‘My God, Joshua, you did that to him after only four rounds?’ I didn’t punch much at all after that and that was the way he was. I said, ‘You know, I can do something here.’ “

Clottey routed Diego Corrales in his next fight in what would be the last bout of Corrales’ legendary career before he died in a motorcycle accident in Las Vegas. He then stopped Zab Judah in Las Vegas and won the International Boxing Federation welterweight title in 2008. Still, he knew he could do more.

Promoter Bob Arum offered him a bout with Cotto last June. Though Clottey lost a split decision, his performance was enough to convince Arum that Clottey was a tough opponent for any welterweight in the world.

“Everybody knows that Joshua Clottey is a tremendous defensive fighter and can put a real hurting on an opponent,” Arum said.

While Arum was attempting to put together a Pacquiao fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Scolpino stayed in close contact with Arum and Top Rank executive Carl Moretti. He kept telling them that if negotiations fell apart, Clottey was available to face Pacquiao.

Scolpino’s persistence paid off. When Arum finally got frustrated by Mayweather’s contractual demands, he called Scolpino and quickly made the fight.

Clottey could hardly believe his good fortune. He would finally get the opportunity to follow Nelson, a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and Quartey, and become the next Ghanaian to become a star in the States.

“It would have been easy to quit,” Clottey said. “Nobody was on the side of Joshua Clottey. Nobody. I had faith and I knew if I kept working and kept trying, sooner or later it would happen. And here I am.”

He looked around the spacious suite he was occupying. He remembered all the fans he’d greeted earlier in the lobby. He had, Joshua Clottey said, arrived.

“Can you believe this?” Clottey said. “Of course I’m enjoying this. It’s like a dream. I am a very happy man right now.”

Nearly six feet tall and around 300 pounds, Gyamfi swoons over Clottey’s boxing skills and swears his countryman will run away with Manny Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization welterweight crown when they tangle on March 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Gyamfi, who acts as Clottey’s cook and assistant, thinks the challenger will pummel Pacquiao into submission or beat him up so badly the Filipino ring icon won’t be able to perform in his post-fight party for the first time.

“He (Manny) will be going straight to the hospital, with his face cut up and bruised,” Gyamfi told Manila-based sportswriters at a Gaylord Texan Hotel bar here Tuesday. “He’s going to be hit by a brick.”

Gyamfi said the secret to Clottey’s strength lies in African food.

In the HBO pre-fight documentary of the Pacquiao-Clottey clash dubbed Road to Dallas, Gyamfi was shown cooking salmon slices and vegetables for Clottey.

Like Clottey, chief trainer Lenny DeJesus believes The Event is going to be interesting.

“This (Pacquiao-Clottey) is a dangerous fight,” said DeJesus, who worked with Pacquiao and Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach as cutman for five fights from 2003 to 2005.

DeJesus insists his partnership with Clottey has been a good one and is capable of toppling boxing’s No. 1 tandem.

“Roach may spring up a surprise for me, but I also have a surprise for him,” said DeJesus. “If he knew this is going to be an easy fight he would be talking, but he’s being careful.”

DeJesus added that Clottey sparred for only 90 rounds, all against southpaws, and dispatched all of his sparmates after four rounds.

MANILA, Philippines – Reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao - Joshua Clottey faced off in the final press conference leading to the “The Event” fight card on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Promotions for the event are almost coming to an end, with the final press conference held at the $1.2-billion (P55.2-billion) Cowboys Stadium on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).

Pacquiao, who arrived early at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium together with his wife and his team, said he is excited to defend his title against the Ghanaian in front of more than 45,000 fans.

The Filipino champ insists he is not taking Clottey lightly. "Clottey is a good fighter," said Pacquiao, who has won 11 consecutive fights. "He is so strong and he is bigger and taller than me.

"I don't want to underestimate this opponent. I am going to do my best and give it a shot," he added.

Clottey, for his part, said he is ready for whatever strategy the pound-for-pound king has set on him.

“I never crack before so I want to see if he can do that. But no matter what happens, I will still respect him,” said Clottey, a former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion.

Both fighters appeared calm in addressing the crowd. However, they assured their fans there will be fireworks once the opening bell rings.

Pacquiao is also grateful for the Ghanaian's respectful manner of addressing him. Just like the Filipino champ, Clottey's refused to trade trash talk.

“I like this match very much because there's no trash talk and we can be a good example to everyone,” said the Filipino boxing superstar.

Pacquiao's coach, Freddie Roach, remains confident that they can get the durable Clottey in the latter rounds.

"We can stop him in the late rounds," Roach said. "I didn't say a knockout but we can stop him with an accumulation of punches. He (Clottey) has never seen a guy like Manny Pacquiao before and I don't think he will be able to handle it."

Roach said this fight has its own unique characteristics because they are fighting in a gridiron stadium as opposed to the smaller casino venues in Las Vegas that they are accustomed too.

"This will be the biggest crowd we have fought in front of," Roach said. "We have a good game plan. Manny Pacquiao is at the top of his game right now.

Pacquiao to prevail

Some sports scribes present at the press conference, meanwhile, gave their fearless forecasts. Most of them believe the Filipino will win a very hard fight.

“Clottey will put up a fight,” Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports told ABS-CBN News.

Kieran Mulvaney of Reuters said: “I can see Clottey holding on... But Manny will prevail.”

Pacquiao has a record of 50-3-2 (with 38 knockouts) while Clottey has 35 wins (with 20 KOs) and 3 losses.

Both fighters have one more day of training before the weigh-in on Friday (Saturday in Manila).

Center of attraction

Aside from Pacquiao, the center of attraction in the Cowboys Stadium is its HD screen, the largest in the world.

The 180 ft. by 70 ft. screen costs $40 million (P1.8 billion)

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “You'll be able to see Manny and Joshua 70 feet tall… It’s lowered to 50 feet.”

Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey bout could possibly have former World Boxing Association welterweight champion Antonio Margarito fighting in the co-main event.

If this turns out to be the case, it would be the first bout for Margarito in over a year since his 9th round stoppage loss to Shane Mosley in January 2009.

Rafael states that Margarito, who had his license revoked in California for having an illegal substance in his hand wraps before his fight with Mosley, could get licensed by the Texas Athletic Commission for the fight, and wouldn’t need for the California Athletic Commission to renew his license. Margarito’s opponent would be Carson Jones, who recently stopped knockout artist Tyrone Brunson.

Other fights on the undercard, former World Boxing Council lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (60-9-1, 52 KO’s) vs. fringe welterweight contender Alfonso Gomez (21-4-2, 10 KO’s). This fight has mismatch written all over it. Although Castillo was once one of the best lightweights in the world five years ago, he’s gone downhill since then as he’s moved up in weight to the welterweight division where he seems too small.

The 5’8” Castillo has lost two out of his last seven fights, with his five wins coming against 2nd tier opponents. It would seem likely that Gomez, a good brawling type fighter, will be too much for Castillo and end up dominating him.

Gomez has looked good in some of his fights, beating Jesus Soto Karass recently by a 6 round technical decision in November, and beating Carson Jones, Arturo Gatti, Jesse Feliciano and Ben Tackie. However, Gomez has been beaten when he steps it up a class, getting stopped by Miguel Cotto in 2008 and losing to Peter Manfredo Jr.

Also on the card will be unbeaten super bantamweight prospect Roberto Marroquin (11-0, 8 KO’s)

With his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. all but off, Manny Pacquiao has instead agreed to fight Joshua Clottey on March 13, Pacquiao's camp said Friday.

Clottey's manager told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael that he spoke to Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank's Bob Arum, on Friday about the fight's details but would only confirm a "seven-figure" purse.

"Josh is ecstatic about it," Vinny Scolpino told ESPN.com. "I think we can get this done in a couple of days. He's coming home [to New York from Ghana] on Monday."

Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, which promotes Pacquiao, told Rafael on Friday night the bout would take place at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

DuBoef said he and Top Rank chairman Bob Arum would fly to Dallas on Saturday to meet with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for a tour of the facility and to finalize the deal before being Jones' guests at the Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles playoff game on Saturday night.

Jones was interested in bringing Pacquiao-Mayweather to the stadium and offered a $25 million site fee, the largest in boxing history. However, while Arum wanted to meet with Jones and discuss the offer, Mayweather representative Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions canceled the trip at the last minute, angering Arum, a move that in retrospect was the beginning of the end of the fight.

DuBoef also said former welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito would fight on the pay-per-view card in the co-feature if he is relicensed at a hearing later this month or in February. Margarito had his license revoked in California for attempting to load his gloves with an illegal substance before facing Shane Mosley last January. Margarito is eligible to ask for his license back after a year, although there is no guarantee he will get it.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, which had also been tentatively set for March 13, was called off Wednesday night by Arum after mediation failed to resolve their issues over drug-testing protocol.

Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs) last fought in a split-decision loss to welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto on June 13, a fight many believed Clottey won.

"It's the biggest payday he ever made in his life," Scolpino told ESPN.com. "He should be doing flips. It's a huge opportunity."

Trainer Freddie Roach first told ESPN's Brian Kenny of Pacquiao's plan Friday afternoon, before Arum confirmed the news to The Associated Press.

Clottey had last been slated to fight Carlos Quintana on Dec. 5. But that undercard bout was called off when Kelly Pavlik pulled out of the main event against Paul Williams with a lingering hand injury.

Mayweather maintained Thursday night that he still wanted to fight Pacquiao. The final issue in the negotiation for the megafight was drug testing.

"That would have been a tremendous fight. I wanted to see it," Scolpino said. "But this is boxing. It's crazy."

Pacquiao and Mayweather had agreed to unlimited random urine testing, but Mayweather also insisted on random blood testing, even though the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which would oversee the bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, requires only urine testing.

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) didn't want blood testing but later relented and agreed to three blood tests: one during the week of the kickoff news conference, which would have taken place next week, one random test to be conducted no later than 30 days before the fight and a final test in his dressing room after the fight. Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) would be subject to the same testing procedures.

When they could not come to an agreement, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Mayweather, turned to a mediator, retired judge Daniel Weinstein, who had successfully mediated a series of disputes between Top Rank and Golden Boy in 2007.

But after nine hours in mediation on Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., and further attempts to come to a resolution on Wednesday failed, the fight was pronounced dead by the Pacquiao camp.

It is 7:13 a.m. in Los Angeles and Manny Pacquiao, the world's best pound-for-pound boxer, is jogging on a public high school track. There are palm trees in the distance, and the low hum of traffic on I-10 is starting to turn into a low roar as the Filipino boxer, clad in a red tracksuit, dashes around the dirt oval despite a painful shin splint. A handful of early-arriving students hang on the chain-link fence surrounding the track and watch him do his work. The Pac-Man is preparing for his March 13 fight against Joshua Clottey, a dangerous but relatively unknown welterweight from Ghana. The $49.95 pay-per-view fight is billed as "The Event" but could easily be called "The Letdown."

Just three months ago, boxing was preparing for its version of the Super Bowl. Fresh from his mega-fight win over Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao had begun negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr., a brash welterweight whom non-sports fans know best from his appearance on Dancing with the Stars. The proposed battle was being compared to some of the greatest matchups in boxing history. Even people who had given up on boxing or hadn't really thought about it much were talking about the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which would probably earn each boxer $40 million, the most lucrative match ever. But negotiations became so acrimonious that they descended to the level of bad soap opera. Mayweather insisted on Olympic-style random blood testing, which Pacquiao refused, saying that drug-testing rules should be decided by boxing commissions, not individual fighters. Though suspicions were raised that Pacquiao was on some sort of performance-enhancing drug, the Filipino boxer — who has won an unprecedented seven belts in seven weight classes, putting on 40 lb. throughout his career — has never tested positive for banned drugs. He says he is willing to submit to random urine testing. (See pictures of Olympic athletes' tattoos.)

Pacquiao's camp says the boxer refused the blood testing because he is superstitious and doesn't want to give blood so close to fight time. He was blood-tested a couple of days before his fight with Erik Morales, and lost. "It made me weak," says Pacquiao, who is suing Mayweather for sullying his reputation. There is speculation in some boxing gyms that Mayweather knew about Pacquiao's aversion to pre-fight blood testing and used it as a tactic to duck him. But Mayweather insists that he simply wants to reform the sport's drug policies. "I am taking a stand," he says, adding, "I should get to choose who I want to fight." But by allowing the negotiations to collapse, Pacquiao and Mayweather quickly became defined as the boxers who wouldn't fight each other. "I think Floyd is scared of Manny," says Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer. "I think the public is disgusted by the controversy, but they still want the fight to happen." To fill the vacuum and assuage dissatisfaction, each boxer decided to take on formidable interim opponents. Pacquiao will fight Clottey, and Mayweather will battle "Sugar" Shane Mosley on May 1. The hope is that if Pacquiao and Mayweather both win their respective fights, they will work out their differences and fight in the fall. "My nails are going to be bitten down to the bone waiting until May 2," says Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports, which is hoping to televise the Pacquiao-Mayweather spectacle.

Now that the pesky Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight that nobody wanted to see is finally dead, it’s time to get down to some real business.

Although, which fighter do you think was actually at fault for that whole…

Just kidding. I think we’ve all had enough of that crap for a while.

Well, the players have changed but the game remains the same—and the name of the game is: Whose ass is Manny Pacquiao gonna kick next?

And our next contestant is…Joshua Clottey!

Actually, I’m having a little too much fun here and getting a bit carried away. Clottey is no supersonic-breasted villain in a Wapakman movie. He shows up ready—and quite able—to tangle.

The 33-year-old Clottey has a record of 35-3 with 20 KOs. He is a tough, physical pressure fighter who stalks his opponents behind a tight, high-handed defense.

He is a quick-fisted, accurate counterpuncher with an excellent left hook. And he has a good jab when he decides to use it.

His most recent fight was in June against Miguel Cotto. He lost a split-decision in a fight in which many thought he was punked by the judges.

He also lost by decision to Antonio Margarito in 2006. He had won the early rounds before breaking his hand in the fourth. Perhaps if that hand had been wrapped by the trainer of his opponent, the injury could have been avoided.

His only other loss was by 11th-round disqualification for repeated, intentional head-butts to Carlos Baldomir in a 1999 bout that Clottey was winning.

He’s managed to win a few fights, too. He beat Zab Judah via nine-round technical decision in 2008 and had a dominating win on points over a beefed-up version of the late Diego Corrales in 2007.

And for those who have just returned from a lengthy Antarctic expedition, a record-breaking stint on a Russian space station, or have recently awoken from a prolonged comatose state, there is a Filipino fighter named Manny Pacquiao who has been on a bit of a roll himself.

In a November fight with Miguel Cotto, after a competitive first five rounds during which Manny dropped Cotto twice, Pacquiao reached cruising speed and began to dominate, winning by 12th-round TKO.

This fight came, of course, after Pacquiao stuck Ricky Hatton like a Pamplona Bull putting its horn up the ass of a moron who had the bright idea of trying to run with it through the streets of Spain.

Pacquiao is a very fast-handed, hard-punching southpaw. He uses rapid in-and-out and side-to-side movement to set up stinging punches from angles that may have made Isaac Newton rethink his work.

The story of the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight is going to be about whether Clottey’s pressure and counterpunching can overcome Pacquiao’s foot speed and quick-handed, sharp-punching attacks.

Clottey has been a difficult opponent for everyone he’s faced and Pacquiao probably won’t be the exception. Especially for the first eight rounds or so.

Trying to penetrate Clottey’s guard is like trying to get near one of Pacquiao’s veins with a needle—no easy task, even for someone with the speed and offensive capabilities of Pacquiao. At the same time, Pacquiao is not going to be there for Clottey to hit either.

Clottey is the type of fighter who needs to be set before he can throw. Pacquiao’s foot speed and movement are going to create all manner of vexation for Clottey, as he’ll have a hard time planting his feet to mount any type of sustained offense.

I see Pacquiao outworking Clottey and building a small lead early, although possibly without getting a whole lot of hard, clean punches through Clottey’s guard.

At some point, Clottey is going to have to open up a bit and try to slow Pacquiao down, probably by throwing his customary left hooks in the direction of Manny’s body. When he does, look for Manny’s right hook to counter effectively.

I think that by about the eighth round, Pacquiao will have assumed command and forced Clottey to either fight a losing battle of exchanges or spin himself into a defensive cocoon that he won’t be able to chew his way out of.

Clottey will have his moments along the way. But being light on power, he won’t be able to do enough damage or land a high enough volume of punches to slow Pacquiao to the point of submitting to his pressure game.

Clottey is more of a contender than a contestant playing the “Whose ass is Manny gonna kick next?” game, so I think he'll find a way to make it to the finish line. I’m going with Pacquiao by solid decision.

Watch Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey Live Stream Online -- had a good night’s rest and was up bright and early as he headed to the nearby Grapevine High School in Dallas for his morning run on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

The sun was out but the wind was still a bit chilly. Pacquiao looked energized as he did his rounds along with members of his team and pet dog Pacman.

Coach Freddie Roach did a few rounds himself.

Ten rounds were all his coaches wanted but Pacquiao couldn’t be stopped. He insisted on more, completing 13 laps around the oval.

“Masarap ang weather eh,” said Pacquiao. “Asa kundisyon.”

Pacquiao’s coaches are extremely pleased saying the 7-time division champion has peaked perfectly to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against Joshua Clottey.

“Maintain na lang, light [work out] lang para siguradong 120% sa fight,” said co-trainer Buboy Fernandez.

At the parking lot, American high schoolers gathered to get a glimpse of the Filipino boxing superstar.

And there were more fans lined up outside the convention center of the Gaylord Hotel when news spread that Pacquiao’s afternoon workout would be open to the public.

When the doors opened, fans rushed in to get a good spot.

There were big names that are now big time Pacquiao fans.

“It’s his heart, his work ethic, and all that he's done. He's pushed himself to become a world champion,” said Dallas Cowboys owner Jerery Jones.

“I know he can finish it off in 3 rounds, but please, for us in Texas, first time to have a big fight like this... please make it last at least to 6 so we all go home happy,” said Hall of Fame football star Michael Irvin.

Pacquiao was more than impressive during the 2-hour workout. The Filipino showed why he is the most sensational name in boxing today, displaying exceptional speed from both hands and feet.

International media men circled the entire ring capturing every move. Nearly everyone who witnessed Pacquiao in action agreed he will be too much for Clottey

“He makes me look good,” said Roach.

“No, he makes me look even better,” replied Pacquiao.

Fans who waited till the end got their wish as Pacquiao obliged, giving autographs and posing for pictures.

Pacquiao’s vs Clottey is already in Texas, too, and had his open workout as well.

Clearly, there was less fuss and fans in attendance. The African fighter was cool though not so many are giving him a chance against Pacquiao.

Clottey even shared some light moments with Roach.

“I respect and admire Manny Pacquiao but this is a business and so I meet Manny in the field and in business I must beat him. I have everything to stop his speed and I am in good shape… I am very ready,” said the challenger.

“People saying I have no chance and that Manny will beat me easy, I’m telling you, it's not going to be easy for him,” Clottey added.

Clottey believes he being chosen to face Pacquiao at the famous Dallas Stadium is a gift from God.

Pacquiao is clearly the favorite here against Clottey but this doesn’t faze the Ghanaian. The challenger believes he can score the biggest upset in the boxing world.

Clottey's Advantage Against Pacquiao

Watch Pacquiao vs Clottey Live Stream - Fight week has arrived, but it seems a lot of the excitement over Pacquiao vs Clottey has been subsumed by the interest in Mayweather-Mosley. Part of that - as Rumble writer Anthony Wilson points out - is obviously due to the disappointment over Pacquiao-Mayweather and the specter of steroids. Some of it is owed to the fact that there was no 24/7 leading into this fight and it was only made official 8 weeks ago. The largest reason, though, why there seems to be so little heat is that it is nearly universally believed Pacquiao will win. There was genuine drama going into Pacquaio's most recent fights; his last fight as such a clear favorite was against the over matched David Diaz, and Manny was predictably brilliant. Joshua Clottey, however, is no David Diaz. Clottey has some clear advantages over Manny and is capable of winning this fight. An underdog? Yes. A sacrificial lamb? No.

Here are some reasons for Pacquiao fans to be concerned and Clottey fans to have hope going into their March 13 showdown.

Size: Joshua Clottey is a big man, or at least a big welterweight. He has been at 147 lbs his entire career, and it's a miracle he can still make weight. Against the late Chico Corrales, Joshua Clottey entered the ring at nearly 170 lbs.

Manny Pacquiao, as shown in the preview show, struggles to retain the size to fight as a welterweight. He will likely enter the ring at no more than 150 lbs, a full ten or fifteen less than Clottey. While Pacquiao has faced naturally bigger men before in De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, Clottey will be the largest and fittest opponent of his career.

Right Hand: Joshua Clottey has a deceptive and quick straight right hand. It is not as flashy as Pacquiao's weapons, but it lands well and can be used at range. Manny's most recent difficult fights - Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez - came against fighters with strong right hands. Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, and Cotto were predominantly left handed punchers, will Pacquiao be able to adapt?

Durability: Joshua Clottey has walked through some of the biggest welterweight punchers of his generation with barely a backward step. Clottey has only suffered one knockdown in his career, an off-balance shot against Miguel Cotto, but has otherwise never been noticeably impacted by any punch.

Against Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao had some difficulties the first few rounds before taking control after a big uppercut knockdown in the third. That was the punch that changed the fight. Can Manny hurt Clottey with a single shot? It's possible, but he hasn't shown vulnerability like Cotto or Hatton.

Dirty: I mean this is the most flattering possible way, but Joshua Clottey is a little bit dirty. He was DQ'd against Carlos Baldomir for head butting and has used the tactic in several other fights. Clottey has also been known to punch low to gain an advantage.

Manny has been known to get a little wild after being cut, and is a very clean fighter. Is it possible he could be thrown off his game by a bigger man with nothing to lose and a loose relationship with the rules?

Expectations: Manny has now established himself firmly as a historically great fighter on a historically great run. While a lot of people will argue that it is impossible for Clottey to win a decision because Pacquiao is the attraction and such a financial power, what if the opposite is true?

Over the last couple of years Manny Pacquiao has won virtually every round by huge margins. Other than the first rounds against Cotto, Manny has barely even been hit. Expectations are so high for Manny that if the rounds are even competitive might the judges give Clottey the benefit of the doubt?

I'm not going to step on my toes for my final prediction, but these factors and a few others give Joshua Clottey a legitimate chance to score the upset win. When the bell rings on Saturday night Manny Pacquiao fans should feel some butterflies in their stomach and Joshua Clottey fans should feel some hope. Clottey will have to put in the performance of a lifetime, but make no mistake, Manny Pacquiao is not going to "David Diaz" Joshua Clottey.

And if he does... well, that will be worth watching too.

Arnel Pineda to sing anthem in Pacquiao-Clottey Fight

MANILA, Philippines -- It's confirmed.

Arnel Pineda, the Filipino front man of popular American rock band "Journey," will sing the Philippine national anthem in Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s much-awaited fight with Ghanaian Joshua "The Grand Master" Clottey on March 13 (March 14 in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Pineda confirmed that he was invited by Pacquiao to sing "Lupang Hinirang" in his upcoming fight.

"Pupunta ako sa Dallas to sing sa laban ni Manny, this Thursday [ang alis ko]," Pineda said.

("I am going to Dallas this Thursday to sing in Manny's fight.")

"I'm really happy kasi matutuloy na dahil nahihiya na ako kay Manny kasi pangatlong invitation na ito sa akin. Baka kasi isipin ay iniisnab ko. So finally, matutuloy na," he said.

The crooner said he was not able to sing in Pacquiao's previous fights because of his hectic schedule as Journey's vocalist.

Pacquiao vs Clottey – With or without the alleged injury, 7-division champ Manny Pacquiao said he is all set for his world title defense against Joshua Clottey, adding that he has a "new technique" against the Ghanaian. Pacquiao said all he is waiting for is the fight date itself which is on March 13 (March 14 in Manila). "Right now 100% conditioned na tayo, ready na tayo sa fight. Maintain na lang sa kondisyon," said the Filipino champ, who will be defending his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown. He also said the alleged injury he earlier experienced will not affect his performance against the bigger Clottey.

"Wala namang injury, sore lang ang muscle," he said.

The power-puncher from General Santos City also claimed that he has the answer to Clottey’s larger build—strong punches and skillful defense.

“We’ve created a new technique,” said Pacquiao. “It’s going to be exciting, and a lot of action in the ring.”

The Pacquiao vs Clottey fight, dubbed as “The Event” will take place at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Clottey, for his part, said he is ready to take away Pacquiao’s welterweight title—and Manny’s Filipino fans are afraid that the Ghanaian meant it.

“I’m very, very, hundred percent for sure that I am the only one who can beat him!” Clottey said at a training session for the press at New York’s Kingsway Gym on Thursday.

Lenny de Jesus, Clottey’s trainer, believes Pacquiao is going to pass his prime.

“Pacquiao has been at the top for five years, I think his time is coming. Clottey is ready to fight tomorrow,” De Jesus claimed.

Fight seen to go until late rounds

Pacquiao fans in McAllen, Texas are not taking the fighter from Ghana lightly. Many believe Clottey can bring the scheduled 12-round boxing match to its later rounds.

“Mga ten. Bagsak yan si Clottey,” said Boboy Yongson, one of Pacquiao’s fans.

“I think the fight is gonna go the distance. Pacquiao will win by a close decision,” said boxing promoter Anthony Cavasos.

Foreign boxers also shared their own prediction regarding the outcome of the fight.

Junior lightweight boxer Jorge Luis Teron of the US, ranked 12th by the Word Boxing Association (WBA), said Clottey’s good defense will allow him to hold out: “It’s going to be real hard for Manny to knock him out. I think it might go to a decision.”

National American Boxing Federation reigning lightweight title holder Brandon Rios, also of the US, is confident for a Pacquiao victory before Round 12: “Clottey is a good fighter; he takes a lot of punches. Ghanian Will Likely Support Manny Pacquiao Rather Than Their Own Joshua Clottey

Last week, as I was about to leave our office’s cafeteria at lunchtime, Dr. Kofi Bimpong of Ghana, Africa called my attention to his table. He wanted to ask me something. He asked me that if I knew that I looked like Manny Pacquiao. I laughed heartily and said that he looked liked Joshua Clottey. After sharing some more laughter I asked him directly who he supports. His reply was “Oh Manny Pacquiao 100%”. Puzzled by his answer I pressed some more.

Kofi said that Ghana is a small country (23 M population), at least compared to the Philippines, and that the Clotteys are quite known. He mentioned that he had 2 other brothers – “Tenda” and “Ike”. In fact he said that Ike, also a boxer will be fighting in the undercard. This last bit of information I forgot to ask where he got it and I cannot verify. I checked Boxrec and found a Thunder Clottey and an Ishmael Clottey – both from Ghana. I don’t know if he was referring to these 2 boxers.

Moving on, I asked Kofi why he wasn’t supporting his countryman like most Filipinos will support Pacquiao. His answer surprised me.

“Joshua Clottey is arrogant and disrespectful. In fact people that I know from Ghana want him to lose. Manny Pacquiao is humble and that’s why he is respected”.

I asked him if he was sure about Clottey. Kofi repeated that indeed in general Ghanaian’s don’t like Joshua Clottey. He also told me that 90% of Ghanaians want Manny Pacquiao to win. He offered to give me some links that will support his statements.

Now interviewing one person from Ghana may not reflect who an entire country supports but it is a reflection of where Manny Pacquiao’s reputation stands as a global icon in the sport of boxing and that his on and off the ring demeanor has earned him fans from many countries.

With regards to Joshua Clottey’s reputation off the ring, not much has been written whereas Pacquiao’s every move seems to be documented. On the ring, we know that The Grandmaster, Joshua Clottey’s monicker, is excellent in his craft and has been in many ring wars with notable opponents in his resume albeit he has lost the most important ones in close fashion.

For me and close to 92 million other Filipinos (NSO 2009 projection) plus 11 million more working and living in other countries throw our full support behind the Philippine National Fist.

This brings me now to answer Dr. Bimpong’s first question. I answered “Yes some people say that I do but I also added that I am ahead of him by one bath”. Didn’t quite get it? Let me explain. You see in the Philippines there is a popular statement that you are handsomer or prettier than another person by the number of baths that you have taken ahead of that other person. If I say that I am ahead of you by 100 baths then it probably means that your mother is the only one who loves you.

Pacquiao vs Clottey - You don’t hear much about it otherwise, but the Kingsway Gym periodically gets its moment of fame whenever there’s a big fight in New York -- and sometimes even when the big fight is in, say, Dallas. Its location, at Fifth Avenue and 28th Street, makes it easy to reach for Manhattan-based media types, many of whom are prone to developing allergies at the very mention of words like “Bronx” and “Brooklyn,” and, as boxing gyms go, you’d have to say that it borders on the hygienic, in that the toilets flush and nobody spits on the floor. The interior is sufficiently bright that photographers and TV crews know they won’t have to hump in a bunch of lighting equipment up a flight of stairs from street level, so they like it too. Of course, the very factors that make it an ideal location for these Media Day extravaganzas are counterintuitive to boxing tradition. A boxing gym is supposed to be dark and dank and, if not foul-smelling, exude that blend of 40 year-old cigar ash, human body odor, rodent excretia, and backed-up plumbing that provides a gym with its own distinctive aroma.

In that respect the Kingsway can only function as an impostor. It doesn’t smell like a gym, feel like a gym, or even look much like a gym in any traditional sense. On the other hand, on this day at least, Lenny DeJesus looks every inch a trainer: As he waits for Joshua Clottey to go to work he is wearing clean dungarees a zippered jacket over a t-shirt, a jaunty black Kangol cap on his head, and a white towel draped over his left shoulder. DeJesus is a 64 year-old boxing lifer, one of those guys most boxing fans have seen climb up and down the steps for years without ever knowing his name. On the other hand, you’ve probably read his name a lot in the last two weeks. That was when the March issue of ESPN: The Magazine hit the stands, with a story (“The Substitute”) on Clottey that described DeJesus as a “part-time locksmith and long-time boxing satellite” and conveyed the distinct impression that as he heads into he biggest fight of his life against Manny Pacquiao, the supervisory role in Clottey’s corner had been entrusted to the Village Idiot. Now it looks like one of the PR minions had instructed Lenny to drop by the wardrobe department and pick up a trainer’s uniform.

1:15: Josh is in the ring

DeJesus stands off to one side and watches Clottey go through the motions while a large Ghanaian named Bruce wields the mitts. The other one-third of the corner DeJesus will be running, an even larger Ghanaian named Kwaku Gyamfi, keeps time. Lenny just watches. He seems to be paying attention, but he issues no instructions.

“Look,” says one member of the fight mob as he watches Clottey’s workout, “Clottey is 32 years old. He’s had almost 40 fights. There’s nothing you can tell him now that’s going to turn him into a different fighter. You just wind him up and let him go.

“And what’s the corner going to tell him during the fight -- other than “Get up, Josh!”

Maybe “Josh! Stay down!”?

1:35: Josh hits the double-end bag

Irish middleweight John Duddy has had a place on the Pacquiao-Clottey undercard since its inception, but he was just added to the Media Day lineup this morning. Half the photographers and most of the print guys seem more interested in Duddy, and they keep watching the door behind Clottey. In December of 2007 De Jesus was in Duddy’s corner at the King’s Hall in Belfast when the Irishman beat former Commonwealth champion Howard Eastman. Irish Ropes had just begun to shake up the Duddy corner; Don Turner had replaced Harry Keitt, and Lenny was the cut man, taking George Mitchell’s place. Both Keitt and Mitchell are back and De Jesus long since moved along. That is the live of a vagabond cornerman. Hell, earlier in the Filipino champion’s career he even worked as Pacquiao’s cut man.

“There are five things you can do in a corner and I’ve done all of ‘em,” says Lenny. “Not even Freddie Roach can say that. I’ve been the bucket guy, the stool guy, the advisor, the cut-man, and I’ve been the head guy before, too. But mostly I’ve been a cut man.”

It has been nearly 22 years, in fact, since the last time De Jesus was the chief second in a world title fight. He was in charge of Miguel Santana’s corner, and led the celebration when IBF lightweight champ Greg Haugen, his face bloodied from a deep cut to his right eyebrow, failed to answer the bell for the 12th round.

“We had the title for about 15 minutes,” he recalled. “The fight was in Seattle [Tacoma, actually], and after they’d raised Santana’s hand they decided that the cut had come from a butt, so they went back to the scorecards.”

Referee Jim Cassidy said that he was aware of the rule, but assumed that Santana was ahead on all three cards anyway. As it turned out he was ahead on only one of them, and, long after most of the crowd had gone home, a “stunned” Haugen was awarded the decision. The headline in the local paper read “Santana ‘robbed’ as Haugen gets bizarre win,” and the story noted that “Santana’s trainer, Lenny DeJesus, of New York City, thought his fighter had been robbed. ‘My fighter’s hand was raised in victory, and my fighter was awarded this fight!” said the distressed DeJesus.”

“They never looked a replay or nothing. Even the referee told is he knew it was a punch and not a butt,” adds Lenny. “The reason they did it was everybody knew Haugen had already signed to fight Jim Watt in London -- for a lot of money.”

Lenny has been doing pretty well until he says that. And here we thought cut men didn’t have to worry about taking too many blows to the head. Watt had retired after his 1981 loss to Alexis Argello -- seven years before Haugen-Santana.

1:40: Josh hits the heavy bag

When the gloves are pulled off Clottey, the towel comes off Lenny’s shoulder for the first time all day. He vigorously sets about drying the fighters forearms and hands, sending a spray of sweat that glistens beneath the lights. Joshua is wearing a dark red t-shirt with a baseball on the front. On the back it says “Baseball.”

Does Clottey play baseball? DeJesus is asked.

“I don’t think so,” says Lenny.

After a January press tour that opened at Cowboys Stadium and moved on to New York, Clottey returned to Accra, where he hoped to secure a visa that would have allowed his trainer, Godwin Nil Dzanie Kotey, to work his corner against Pacquiao. Kotey’s previous visa expired in December of 2009, and the security regulations involved in the process had changed dramatically between then and the time he applied for a new one; over Christmastime a Nigerian passenger had attempted to turn himself into a Roman candle on approach to Detroit. So when Clottey flew back in February to open camp in Fort Lauderdale barely a month before the Pacquiao-Clottey fight, De Jesus had more or less by default become his trainer.

“I guess I’m it,” he told ESPN’s Chris Jones at the time. Jones did not, it should be noted, seem exactly bowled over when Lenny explained that his “first job will be getting this kid up those stairs and into the ring.”

Lenny assumes that Clottey must have worked while he was back in Ghana. DeJesus, in any case, was there to meet him in Florida, and claims that over the last several weeks the challenger has sparred close to 90 rounds.

“I got the sparring partners,” he says. “They was all lefthanders, too.”

1:45: Josh hits the speed bag

John Duddy shows up, in street clothes, and announces that he is not going to work out.

“Nobody told me about this until it was too late,” he explains. “I already did all my work this morning.”

He does pose for a few pictures with Clottey, and chats amiably with boxing writers. Around the gym, grumbling photographers begin to pack away their equipment. Over on the other side of the gym, Media Works’ Ed Keenan describes the Clottey camp in Florida.

“I finally went to Lenny and said ‘Look, you have to give me your phone number. I keep setting up these interviews with Clottey, but then he won’t answer his phone.”

“Lenny tells me ‘Aw, mine won’t work either. A few days ago I fell in the swimming pool with my clothes on and my phone was in my pocket.’

“That was last week. He still hasn’t gotten a phone.”

This might mark Lenny as old school, or maybe just stubborn. Just imagine for a moment, for instance, having to make a split second decision which to carry out of a burning building, his training mitts or his cell phone. It wouldn’t even be close.

But Lenny, we felt like asking him, doesn’t a locksmith need a phone, too?

1:50: Josh talks

Albeit briefly.

For the past month the question has been whether DeJesus or anyone else actually had enough time to get Clottey ready for this fight. The groundwork in Florida was by all accounts preliminary jousting, and from a preparation standpoint, the dog-and-pony show at the Kingsway has largely been a wasted day. Now Joshua Clottey says “I have done all the work I need. I wish I did not even go to Texas for the next eight days. I want the fight to be now.”

Is the tail wagging the dog here, or what?

1:53: Josh done talking

Josh says he’s ready. Lenny says he’s not.

“But that’s not exactly what I’ll say to him,” says Lenny. “Dealing with fighters is dealing like little kids sometimes. If you don’t want them eating candy, you can try to show them how it’s harmful, but if you give them an order -- Don’t eat candy! -- the first thing they’re gonna do is go eat even more when you’re not looking.

“Sure, he needs more work between now and March 13th. He’s fighting Manny Pacquiao! I just gotta figure out a way to make him think it’s his idea.”

Pacquiao’s conditioning coach went on to divulge on the status of their training camp in Los Angeles, California.

“I think we are right on schedule, maybe even a little ahead of it. He looks great, the weight is great, the conditioning is great.”

The Filipino boxing superstar trains at the Wild Card Gym which is owned by his coach, Freddie Roach.

Ariza even commented on Pacquiao’s LA training: “I am not a big fan of LA training because of all of the people here. I thought we had a good camp in the Philippines last fight. Manny trained well over there, but he looks good over here too.”

Promotions and Manny Pacquiao’s camp agreed to fight Joshua Clottey on March 13, 2010. This is the result of the failed negotiations of the megafight Pacquiao vs Mayweather. After both camps didn’t agree with the terms of the fight (specifically the method of drug testing), Bob Arum announced that the pound for pound king will be fighting against the Ghana-native boxer. When I read about this news, I really find it to be a very easy fight for the Filipino fighter. This conclusion is just based on Clottey’s fight against Miguel Cotto (who was beaten by Pacman on their last match).

However, this thinking changed when I heard Freddie Roach said that this match will be one of the best boxing event and Pacquiao will surely have a hard time with him compared to Mayweather. It will not be a boring fight – not directly said by him but this is what he is trying to say.

The said fight will be held at the Cowboys Stadium at Dallas but Arum doesn’t confirm yet if it will be featured in HBO or not.

“Manny Pacquiao is a human being, like everyone else. He’s just a really good fighter who is out there now who is No. 1 now,” Clottey told Lem Satterfield of Fanhouse.com.

“If I win this fight against Manny Pacquiao, I will never feel like I beat the best fighter in the world,” he said. “I will feel like I had a fight with Manny Pacquiao, the best fighter out there, and I won.”

He also clarified that just in case he wins on March 13, people should not regard his victory as an upset.

“I’ll say, ‘It’s not an upset, but a win,’” the Ghanaian stated.

But before the 33-year-old Clottey talks about his possible triumph over Pacquiao, he knows that he first has to overcome the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion.

He said he plans to beat Pacquiao by connecting his shots and wearing him down.

“I can’t throw a lot of punches like Pacquiao will do. But I will connect enough to make him slow down and wear down, and bring his speed down,” he shared.

“I will also rely on my pressure. But I don’t know what Pacquiao is coming to do, so I have to use my head. I don’t know if he’s planning to move around. But I’m not going to make him chase me. I will be right there.”

Happy with training

Clottey, meantime, was more positive about his ongoing training camp in Florida.

The 31-year-old Pacquiao is said to be feeling great about his training camp in Los Angeles, California.

Conditioning coach Alex Ariza told Ronnie Nathanielsz of Philboxing.com that the Filipino boxing superstar was “feeling good and Freddie was obviously happy and had a smile on his face and when they are happy, I am happy.”

Asked to elaborate on why they considered Pacquiao’s performance the best since he opened training camp at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, Ariza replied “he fought literally everybody in the gym. He went eleven rounds easy with four separate sparring partners.”

Pacquiao started off with two rounds against longtime sparring partner, super featherweight David Rodela ( 14-2-2, 6 KO/s) who is known for his quickness, then did three rounds with undefeated light welterweight Mike Dallas (11-0-1, 2 KO’s) followed by three rounds with another undefeated fighter in welterweight Abdulla Amidu (18-0, 17 KO’s) of Ghana where Clottey comes from and ended by going three rounds with experienced welterweight Steve Forbes (34-7, 10 KO’s) who won his last fight against Jason Davis by a 2nd round TKO after dropping unanimous decisions against Oscar De La Hoya and Andre Berto.

Ariza noted that “you have to really be there to believe it. I mean he (Pacquiao) can do whatever he wants when he wants. His footwork was great” even as the conditioning guru admitted he was “so nervous going eleven rounds with the bad leg and everything but he took this morning off, just focused on therapy and exercising it and stretched it, and it held up, thank God.”

Ariza noted that mentally, Pacquiao was “happy and looks great to me. His weight is perfect at 153 pounds, is carrying it around and looks good and he’s in a good mood. He looked phenomenal.”

Plans for tomorrow (Friday in LA) include another day at the track focused around Pacquiao’s footwork and speed, according to Ariza.

Reacting to a report by renowned Top Rank photo journalist Chris Farina that Clottey was ripped and ready, Ariza said “if you saw Manny and he’s fighting this Saturday I don’t expect this fight is going twelve rounds. If Manny fights the way he did today this fight is not going twelve rounds, I can guarantee it.”

A native of Ghana who is preparing for a March 13 challenge for the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) crown held by seven-division champion, Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs), of the Philippines, Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 knockouts), of The Bronx, N.Y., has been speaking with FanHouse from his training quarters facility at Fort Lauderdale's Contender Gym in Fla.

The bout against Pacqauiao is the biggest in the career for the 32-year-old Clottey (pictured above, with trainer Lenny DeJesus), whose only losses were to former world champions, Carlos Baldomir, Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto.

Clottey never has been knocked out, and is known for his steller defense and punching accuracy.

Under new trainer, Lenny DeJesus, Clottey claims to be in the best shape of his life heading into the bout with Pacquiao.

"I have more confidence this time around because I'm taking this fight like if I win, I have bigger things ahead. I have so much respect for Manny, so that gives me more confidence because I respect the guy," said Clottey recently, telling FanHouse that he weighed 154 this past Thursday.

"I respect the guy because, if he has the chance, he can stop me," said Clottey. "So I respect him because of that, and because of that, I'm more confident."

The muscular Ghanaian Joshua Clottey has vowed not to run inside the ring, and he’ll bring the fight to the Filipino pound-for-pound superstar Manny Pacquiao from the opening bell.

“I will follow him; I will come forward in the fight,” the 33-year-old Clottey told James Slater of eastsideboxing.com on Wednesday.

Very Grateful for the fight and opportunity given him by Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank Promotions, Clottey said he wants to return the favor by promising a hell of a fight for the World Boxing Organization welterweight title bout on March 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“I want Manny Pacquiao to know that he picked a guy who will give him all that he wants,” Clottey also told Lem Satterfield of Boxing Fanhouse in another interview. “I’m going to fight until the last bell.”

In his last fight, Pacquiao was left pursuing a backpedalling Miguel Cotto in the last few rounds, eventually stopping the Puerto Rican in the 12th. Cotto came into the fight at a catch weight of 145 pounds after salvaging a close decision over Clottey.

Clottey is over two inches taller than Pacquiao at nearly 5-foot-9 and is expected to tip the scales at around 160 lb on fight night. It would make him the biggest man the General Santos lefty has ever faced in the ring.

After a vacation with his family on Samal Island in Philippines, Pacquiao plans to leave for Los Angeles on Sunday, according to boxing promoter and trusted confidante Rex “Wakee” Salud.

Pacquiao will be accompanied by trainer Nonoy Neri, lawyer Jing Gacal and adviser Michael Koncz.
